October 1: Big Sports Day at South Bay
By Savannah Diosdado - October 9, 2013
On October 1st, South Bay’s sports program was in full swing with a home soccer and home volleyball game.
The soccer team fell to Zane 5 - 2 in a 4 p.m. game, and the volleyball team was in the South Bay cafeteria an hour later.
Before the game, a few South Bay players had concerns about their ability to beat a larger, older team.
Eighth grader Mickayla Delparte said, “We are competitive, but I don’t think we’ll win. Zane has a huge team and we have 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders on our team.”
Coach Oliphant disagreed. "I think we will win this time," he said. When asked his opinion about the opponents, he said, “I think the other team is big”.
This was their third game (they lost the first two). The pressure is on. They shall take their chances.
The game began and the players were ready. Back and forth the ball went; not too much later, Zane scored the first goal.
After a while of the ball going back and forth, a couple of fouls here and a couple of fouls there, Zane scored once again making the score 2 - 0.
A few player substitutions led to another score for Zane. Eventually, South Bay got back in the game. South Bay scored two points in a row, narrowing Zane's lead to 3-2.
Zane's size and experience won the day. “We lost but we have done better than the last game," said Jace Bollman.
Later that afternoon, the varsity girls volleyball team took on Cuddeback School. The game began with a few hits and a 4-8 score with Cuddeback in the lead. As the game went on, Cuddeback scored 10 more points, and South Bay earned 3 points, which made the score 7 - 18. South Bay would end up losing the game.
Cuddeback and South Bay played two more games, and the visiting team won them all.
