History day is rounding the corner for South Bay Middle Schoolers.
County History Day isn’t until February, but Mrs. Schinke wanted to get a head start this year. Since science fair is close to History Day, Mr.Trone, middle school science teacher, and Mrs. Schinke, middle school history teacher, both decided to start History Day early.
This year’s theme is Rights and Responsibilities. “I could think of a thousand topics off the top of my head for [last year’s theme] Turning Points but, Rights and Responsibilities is more narrow,” Says Mrs. Schinke.
Last year three 7th grade girls Caylin Bach, Anya Martinez, and Mai Xiong went to Sacramento for State History Day. “We went to old town sacramento and there was a lot of candy shops and in our hotel we had a pool and spent a lot of time in it,” Says 8th grader Mai Xiong.
Although she had a good time, Mai also says,“It was really pressuring when they told us to set up. We didn't know what they were talking about, and the judge got mad that we didn't know how.”
Students have already been thinking about what they're topics are this year for Rights and Responsibilities. “I'm thinking about doing the rights and responsibilities for ancient Filipino citizens,” says 7th grader James Zwiker.
What about the expectations this year for the South Bay Middle School students? “That everyone will try their best, have fun, compete at county, and become experts at their topics. It would be great if a few kids went to state; it would be icing on the cake,” says Mrs. Schinke.
