C-H-E-E-R!

Everyone has spirit, but some of us just have to show it.
Cheerleading is starting up for the third year at South Bay Middle School. On October 9th, 10th, 11th from 3:15-5, the most school spirited middle schoolers learned the routines in the stretching room with the hope of making the team. Official tryouts are on October 14 at 3:15- 4:30, also at the stretching room.
Cheerleading is important to have at all the games because without the cheerleaders, the teams wouldn't believe that they can win a game.
You might ask, “why would people try out for cheerleading?” Mrs. Becksted, a 5th grade teacher at South Bay, said, ‘’Because it's fun to cheer towards our school and it a great experience.’’ It’s not all fun and games, though: “Cheerleading takes a lot of dedication and ability to work as a team,” she added.
Mrs. Becksted is the person who is in charge of the team; however, Miranda is the coach of the team and teaches the cheerleaders all the cheers and routines.
"I have been doing cheerleading in my life for about 6 years now,” she said. “I make up all my cheers and routines.”
In addition to being fun and great for South Bay's sports teams, cheerleading also offers opportunities for the future.
Milea Lewis is an 8th grader who tried out for cheerleading last year and made it on the team. She went with the rest of the team and the boys' basketball team to the Crescent City Jaycees Tournament last spring. She won a toe-touch competition and earned a scholarship that will help her pay for college. Also, she had a great time going down to Jaycee's and sleeping in a hotel.
“It was really fun going down to Jaycees. It was like a sleepover. We could play games in the room, like ship to shore and scavenger hunt with my coach Miranda," said Milea. “Also it was super cool to win the scholarship," she added.
