Chromebooks, Making a Change in Our Education! By Sage Stanton
Got Chrome? South Bay Middle school does!
Our school has been using the Google Chromebooks for about a year now. As all of the South Bay students know, the computers are very helpful for doing academic assignments. Most of our middle school assignments are technology-based. The Chromebooks have made assignments on the computer easier.
What Motivates Teachers and Students?- Part 2 By Casmira Johnson
We asked the teachers what motivated them, but what motivates students to learn?
8th grader Kat leahy says she thinks that education is “Really important, otherwise we will just be society money suckers. If we can’t contribute to our society, then we’re just taking up the money that the government could be using on something else that’s more important.” “She is motivated by her two friends and “ I have seen what happens to people who haven't got a good education if I do end up homeless or jobless for some reason, I don’t want it to be because I didn't take advantage of my education.”
8th Grade Trip, Clarke Museum or Bust! By Beth Jennings
On March 12, South Bay’s 8th graders went on a field trip to Clarke Museum. The Clarke Historical Museum is Humboldt County’s largest museum. The museum started with Cecile Clarke, a Eureka High history teacher, when she started displaying her collection of local Native American basketry. In 1960, when her school ran out of room for her growing collection of local history items, she sold her family's sheep ranch and used the money to buy the old bank of Eureka building, and she set up her collection there as people gave her more things to put in the museum. The museum was originally called Clarke Memorial Museum but now it’s Clarke Historical museum.
7th Graders, Why Are They Leaving? By Catherine Holper
Why are they leaving? Why are they coming? Is it their choice? Why is it that they are coming here? South Bay Middle School is a charter school, which means that people who live in the area or not in the area can come to this school. Some of the students in the 7th grade are leaving next year in the 8th grade and there have also been students coming to this school during the year. The interesting question is why they are coming here? For some people, it is because they live close, like Beth Jennings, who has been going here since the 5th grade. For some people, it is because they don’t do well in big schools. For others, it is only because they want to go here for some reason of their own, like Katherine Leahy who has been going here for the entire 8th grade. She says, “Because my mom doesn’t want me to go to Zane and I don’t want to homeschooled anymore.”
